On November 19, 2023, I hosted a FUBAR tournament at Lil-Con#7.
Winner of the FUBAR Tournament, Ethan Special. The prize was an Intellivision Flashback console. Photo posted on this page by his permission.
Using my personal copy of FUBAR, I created specific game settings and saved them onto all 8 save files, one file for each of 8 rounds of the tournament. The winner would be the player who won the most rounds.
Just as I created all the settings, I realized I would need exactly 4 participants, as many players as FUBAR was created for. Luckily, five minutes before the tournament began, I collected the registration form and had exactly 4 participants.
In the middle of the first round, Ethan showed up and handed me a second registration form, posted at the other end of the convention hall. There was another player who had signed up, he said, but he couldn't get away from his own booth.
At the end of the first round, one of the participants left, thinking the tournament was over. Ethan started playing in the second round, taking her place. Even with this disadvantage, Ethan ended up winning 4 out of the remaining 7 rounds.
I plan to host more tournaments for FUBAR at future events, with more prizes available. One such tournament will be to create the strongest AI players and have them play against each other. Another event attendee inquired about the different AI players' behaviors and used MATLAB to discover the strongest tweaked values of each formula. So if you're planning to participate when that tournament takes place, you now have a hint to gain a competitive advantage.
